Ingredients
1 cup red lentils (masoor dal), soaked 3–4 hours
1 small onion, finely chopped
1 small tomato, chopped
1 green chili, minced (optional)
1/4 teaspoon turmeric
1/2 teaspoon cumin seeds
2 tablespoons chopped coriander leaves
Salt to taste
Water as needed
1 tablespoon oil for cooking
Instructions
1. Rinse and soak masoor dal for 3–4 hours, then drain.
2. Blend with just enough water to make a smooth, pourable batter.
3. Transfer to a bowl and mix in onion, tomato, chili, turmeric, cumin, coriander, and salt.
4. Heat a non-stick skillet over medium heat and brush lightly with oil.
5. Pour one ladle of batter, spread in a circle, and cook 2 minutes until edges lift.
6. Flip and cook the other side until golden brown.
7. Serve hot with mint chutney or yogurt.
Notes
Use yellow moong dal instead of red for a lighter chilla.
Keep batter slightly thick for crisp edges.
Add grated carrots or spinach for color and nutrients.
Pairs beautifully with coconut chutney or tomato salsa.
